My Raid 5 (4x3TB) was running degraded and before I was able to replace the failed HD, an Ubuntu kernel upgrade fried the raid. Not being able to rebuild the arrray, I zeroed the superblock and recreated. Probably my first mistake. I was able to get the array to resync and become clean but still am ...

I've a Raid 5 that I can't mount do to missing ext4

In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
