PhotoRec going back to earlier sectors - is this a bug or intended behaviour?

I have a question about how PhotoRec (7.2 WIP) works that seems to come up a lot in the forums but I still haven't managed to find a direct answer to. When I run PhotoRec on my 2TB disk, it sometimes seems as if the recovery is in a loop - it will suddenly reset and then go back to an earlier sector ...

Photorec 800 hours remaining and still rising - is this normal?

I'm running the latest version of Photorec (7.2 WIP), it has been running for a day, and it gives an ETA of 800+ hours that is only increasing. Searching this forum shows that if given the opportunity it will go on for many days.

Is this expected behaviour as part of a successful recovery, or did ...

Re: Wrote recovered partition to disk - now what?

Finding a partition and adding it to the partition table is not enough for a successful recovery.
You forgot to use the p command to list files on the NTFS drive.
That gives you an indication if the file system structures have been damaged or not.

The log file as well contains valuable ...

Re: Holy crap - THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

I managed to destroy a 6TB disk with 1 TB of CD rips, Linux backups, 4K movies and so on. I thought this was a lost cause. fdisk did not list any partitions. I don't know what I did with testdisk or what testdisk did but my partitions are back. All of the data has been restored. Every file. I ...

Re: Compiling NTFS support with Cygwin

Is this possible, and if so, what libraries are needed?

https://www.cgsecurity.org/testdisk.pdf

Read chapter 3 "building from source".
The windows version of Testdisk does contain NTFS support as far as I know.

Which particular section are you referring to? I've looked through that whole ...

Wrote recovered partition to disk - now what?

A while back I accidentally ran:

diskpart
format override /fs=ntfs

..on the wrong drive, which turned out to be my 2TB external data drive. The command ran for less than a minute before I realised what I'd done and cancelled it.

After a renewed motivation to recover it over the last few days, I ...

Compiling NTFS support with Cygwin

Is this possible, and if so, what libraries are needed? I had previously compiled a version for Cygwin with the most basic options, but after running it for several days, it finally informed me that I could not list the files on the recoverable partition due to lack of NTFS support, so before ...

Photorec gets stuck in sector-reading loop when run on whole drive

Hi.

I accidentally ran...

diskpart
format override /fs=ntfs

...on my 2TB external hard-drive. The format only lasted for a few seconds before I stopped it with Ctrl+C, but it was enough to make the drive unavailable to Explorer and lose my partition tables. The drive must have been really ...

Btw can you see that image? All I'm seeing is text that says Image, does this forum block images or something?
