can I recover an HFS+ partition that has been reformatted (to HFS+, leaving it empty)?

Greetings, firstly many thanks for making your software available for free, it's much appreciated.
I have an external disk that contained, 10 years ago, an apple time machine backup that I would now very much like to access.
Unfortunately, it seems that I have since reformatted this disk, again to HFS+, leaving it looking completely empty.
The data is there, since I can recover many files using hfsprescue, and the files appear in a folder named backups.backupdb.
However, that's rather messed up :(
I've not written anything to the disk except when reformatting it.
Is it possible to restore that partition such that I can read it again, using testdisk?
I've read the docs a few times and I'm coming to the conclusion that it is probably not possible, but I though I would ask before giving up!
Vary many thanks,
Jim Hayes.
