Before I go into details for all you generous-with-your-time helpful people, I would like to ask for some informed opinions about the comparative efficacy of TestDisk versus the many paid partition recovery programs available. In short, is there anything paid programs can do to recover my lost partition that TestDisk cannot do?
Please compare the features of commercial programs with Testdisk. There are many programs out there, finally. Maybe because the source code of Testdisk is open for everyone. :)
Commercial programs typically have a nice graphical user interface which Testdisk does not have.
But do the vendors offer their program for as many platforms as Testdisk does? Are there even versions available for DOS?

A second question I have is what values should I use for number of heads and number of sectors for a SSD? TestDisk list the value for number of heads as 7 in the Geometry section, and after doing a quick search, it tells me the correct number may be 128. One site that seems informed* tells me that the industry has settled on 255 heads and 63 sectors for SSDs. Thanks, and I look forward to meeting you all hear on this lifeboat :-)

With regards to your second question please be specific and document your case.
