Partition recovery after a failing dock and now a bad MFT

#1 Post by alexx »

I've had a big hard drive fail on me that was being used on an external USB dock.

It was functioning fine and then a few days ago it became inaccessible and Windows does not see the partition anymore.

Now I'm in a bit of a muddle because I've tried to make the partition visible again (chkdsk, rebuilds...) and Testdisk can't access the file list saying the MFT is bad and other things.

Minitool Partition Wizard is now showing a small allocated partition with the rest of the disk being unallocated and R-Studio shows the following:
- An empty space of 16MB.
- Microsoft Reserved of 16MB.
- A 2TB NTFS.
- A 12.73 TB empty space.

So it would seem that Windows has incorrectly fixed the drive at bootup or something else happened?

What is your advice?

Thank you in advance.

Any advice with Testdisk if it's up to the task?

I'm not as familiar with those and only tried them because I'm stuck.
