Suddenly, all files on HDD are unreachable

#1 Post by penguinfuego »

Hi!

I've been setting up my laptop for dual booting between Windows 10 and Fedora (more precisely, Nobara) on a SSD. I also have a HDD for files so I decided to format it as NTFS in order to share it between both OS. After a few days of not using Windows I booted into it in order to configure a gamepad and since I've just barely made any changes to my Windows partition I decided to check how well it could read the files of the NTFS data drive.

The problem: It appeared as a blank drive.

I had fast boot enabled (which I shouldn't) and I don't remember opening up the drive on Windows before. So I think it was a rookie mistake (maybe I had to open the HDD on Windows first?) and luckily I have some of my files backed up. The thing is, after booting into Nobara, the files were gone but the space used is marked as if the files were there. I know files are still there in some way after formatting a drive but it's weird that it's showing how much disk space is being used (and how much is left) as if the files havenn't been erased but are just unreachable. I'd really love to know how to recover the whole drive (if that's possible).

Right now I've used Testdisk but it doesn't show anything abnormal and I haven't found the files I need, only the ones I did erase before this situation. I've also used Photorec and same story, I just found files that were there before formatting the HDD (it had Windows and Ubuntu). I'm guessing some data of the filesystem may have changed when I booted into Windows and it can be reverted. I've tried looking on the hidden files of the data drive and nope. For more context, the drive It's named the same as before so I haven't tried anything else hoping it can be recoved as a whole.

Here's my testdisk log. I just created one the first time I used it so I could upload another if necessary:
