How do I stop testdisk

#1 Post by Thornybird » 27 Nov 2013, 21:51

HI,
sorry for this stupid question, but which is the best way to stop TestDisk in Deep Scan mode?

I've hit Enter a few times to 'Stop', but nothing happens. I've tied closing the window, I've tried Task manager and end task. But nothing is happening. I can't access anything else at the mo - was trying to get the log file to post on here.

I've been Googling for hours trying to find an answer.

Any help appreciated

Theresa

If necessary, uses Ctrl+C.
Has TestDisk found some bad sectors ?

Yeah, STOPPING the program is proving (for me) onerous. CTRL C is not working... I believe it using all previous keystrokes so when I hit "enter" over quit, well it applies 'enter' to further commands as they come up... no matter, I sure wish QUIT or STOP really worked. I need to go back and write a partition... trying to fix CRC error, no trying to recover ANYTHING... good product, sees the external USB MyPassport (WD)... only one bad sector. :o

Reading bad sectors can cause that testdisk and your OS hang.
Did you check your disk using crystal disk info?
Portable version is recommended, because executable windows installer contains adware open candy.
http://crystalmark.info/software/Crysta ... dex-e.html
I've no idea about your OS.
I've no idea about your situation either.
If you're able to list your files, you can use testdisk to copy them.
I suggest to copy each folder.
If testdisk hangs, you can stop it and retry to copy files wirhin your affected folder by starting with the last files and not the first ones until testdisk hangs again.
The result would be that you skipped a corrupt file.
It's only a suggestion.
Then start with copying the next folder.
But it's only possible if testdisk lists your files.
It means, your partition must be in your partition table or testdisk found it already and displays your files.

I'd need more info.
Would it be possible to copy and paste the content of your testdisk.log into your next post?

Thanks Fiona,
Win 7 Pro 64Bit...
I am trying (or was) an ext WD 'My Passport' that was reporting CRC errors.
Does not show up in Disk Management - does or did show a 'disk number' but could not activate.
Used Diskpart to clean it but again, aside from 'disk number', could not get a partition on it.
Did 'test disk' and it started, showed up, but would not finish (as suggested, a bad disk most likely however I did use another application that showed 'only' a small portion bad - believe I used HD Sentinal for that).

Did not create a log.

So I ultimately force closed 'testdisk' and that was that but I'm disappointed in a mostly unused WD external USB3 device that will not function now and really is not old (9 months out of warranty). Blah... thanks again.

I'm presuming 'Q' didn't work? The only time I've found myself having too close the program down to get out of a screen was I think in I was in type or one of the others that I seldom use. Otherwise, Q is my go to key.

"I'm presuming 'Q' didn't work?" ... I cannot connect that 'Q' acronym, what utility is it? Thank you.

Just the letter 'q'. Maybe it's the same as quit, I've just used it so much in navigating the menu when saving files from a lost partition and navigating to the next directory that I just see the letter.
