disk size incorrect, only finds one logical disk

#1 Post by tomj » 08 Jun 2014, 16:10

Trying to repair or at least recover some data from a seagate 500mb HDD from an asus laptop that had multiple "windows repair your computer" attempts. it was a boot drive. I've got it in a USB portable HDD case attached to another PC. it shows up in windows as 2 partitions. In windows properties one logical partition shows 46mb used, 329gb free and the other shows 0 used, 0 free. windows error checking tools on the 0/0 says windows cannot access the disk, and I tried it on the other but it never appeared to start. Photorec and test disk show the disk is 125gb/116GiB (RO), not sure where to go from here as neither was successful in doing anything, not that I expected it would with the incorrect size shown. Any advice would be appreciated. I just need to salvage a few data files as I restored the machine to a new ssd from a backup- I'd like to get the files to get the data on the files added since last backup. I ran seagate seatools first on the disk and it passed so I imagine it is mechanically OK. Note that I have little to no experience with this data recovery stuff and probably know just enough to screw things up!

Would it be pssible to run Analyse / Qucick and if no correct partition is found, Deeper Search also?
If any partition is found, please mark it and press p to have a try to list your data.
In your testdisk folder you'll find a file called testdisk.log.
Can you open your log file and copy and paste the content into your next post?
It's recommended that you don't change or write anything to your disk.
Your Analalyse is read only and doesn't change anything to your disk.

For whatever reason, (maybe the drive has an intermittent problem?) I tried a 4th time and test disk and then photorec both worked this time, but I was hoping to recover ONLY .doc and .odt files. I see the .doc listed there in file types but am unable to enlarge the dos box on my win7 machine to see which (.txt or.tx?) category includes .odt files, or if there is a way to specify a file type, or to pick one of the various text type files from the "test files with header" or "other text files" file type list categories. I'm hoping I can recover .doc and .odt ONLY as if I can't restrict it to these 2 file types there are thousands of .txt files I may have to wade thru to find what I need.
Is there a way to do that?
thanks

You can use PhotoRec and FileOpt.
If you press s you can deselect all file types.
Then check all these file Types where you'd like to recover.
In some cases, file types are summarized to 1 file type family.

I see in file options where file type can be selected, and I've selected .doc, but as I said above I do not see .odt. When you say some file types are summarized to one file type family, because it is not possible to enlarge the width of a dos box on windows 7 and two of the selections containing multiple file types are long strings of characters that extend beyond the readable area of a win 7 dos box is there someone using another operating system that can tell me which of the two file options selections (.txt or .tx?) contains .odt ?

thanks

You can extend your windows, clicking on that icon in the upper left area and choose properties / layout.
Open Office files should probably belong to zip files.
At least, you can test it?

thanks, never knew that about extending the window size. Would .odt files that have never been compressed be found by that "zip archive" selection? if not, what other file types should I check off to find the .odt files?
thanks

Try to enable zip files only!
You can watch my display here:

If it doesn't work, I'll ask for, what filetype family will be the correct one.
