Deeper Search "sees" old partition name but can't restore it

#1 Post by fabio » 13 Nov 2014, 15:16

Hi, I have a disk with a FAT and a NTFS partitions. I am trying to recover the FAT partition that was probably accidentally reformatted by a TV decoder. I tried testdisk Linux 64 bit version, downloaded from the wiki:

Code: Select all

Version: 7.0-WIP
Compiler: GCC 4.4
Compilation date: 2014-11-02T16:24:29
After selecting Analyze I see:

Code: Select all

 1 P FAT32 LBA 0 1 1 101415 181 14 1629243329 [DISCOSMASH!]
 2 P HPFS - NTFS 101415 181 15 121601 57 56 324280320
Quick search gives:

Code: Select all

>D FAT32 LBA 0 1 1 101415 254 63 1629247977 [DISCOSMASH!]
 D HPFS - NTFS 101415 181 15 121601 57 56 324280320
The labed DISCOSMASH! was probably added by default by the TV decoder when accidentally formatting the partition. Clicking P it shows just the $RECYCLE.BIN file. My partition was previously labeled Video and had many files in it. Indeed when I try a Deeper Search I can see it while searching:

Code: Select all

  FAT32 LBA 0 1 1 101415 181 14 1629243329 [DISCOSMASH!]
  FAT32 LBA 0 1 1 101415 181 14 1629243329 [Video]
However when the Deeper search finishes I cannot see anymore the Video partition which I want to recover, I just see this:

Code: Select all

>D FAT32 LBA 0 1 1 101415 254 63 1629247977 [DISCOSMASH!]
 D HPFS - NTFS 101415 181 15 121601 57 56 324280320
So how can I recover my lost Video partition and its files?

Thanks in advance for this great tool :)

Someone has a hint on what can I do to restore the Video partition only visible while doing Deeper Search but not after it finishing? Is there a chance I can recover the partition without using photorec?

Thanks. :)
