Deleted Partition Table then Undetected

Hi to all experts,

Please, need some help here. I have a WD My Passport SE 750G external hard drive that was accidentally dropped to the ground from sitting on top of the computer tower while it was on. The hard drive did not go offline for another hour or so (though it did show signs of slow down). Because it was going slow, I unplugged the hard drive again to see if it improves speed. Unfortunately this is mistake #1, the drive cannot be accessed. it went from NTFS to RAW (via storage management).

Then I searched online for ways to recover the disk and found a Chinese blog explaining the steps of using Testdisk and Minitool Partition Wizard. I followed the instruction on the blog (while cross-reference with the testdisk step by step page, analyze the 750G hard drive, it had the " * HPFS - NTFS", so I did what the blogger said, change * to D to delete the partition table, did a deep search overnight. The next morning, the deep search operation was complete, and went ahead to quit the program and restart my computer (as told by the blogger's instruction to delete partition table and restart, then use Minitool partition wizard to recover). After reboot of my computer, non of the system/software can detect the drive anymore (My computer, storage management, Minitool Partition Wizard, Diskgenius, WD diagnosis, etc....)

Now I am really in a PANIC, the external hard drive is powered up via USB and is spinning without weird noise, but I just can't get anything to recognize the drive.

I can't provide the log file because I was in a panic so I ran testdisk again and I guess the log from last night for overwritten. (all I found in the new log is below)

Any help would be great. this is the first time I've had a damaged drive, so no prior experiences. I am assuming the files are still in the hard drive, just need to get the drive recognized and I could use Minitool to recover the files?

Thank you for your help in advance. I need the files in the drive back. any reformatting won't do me any good.

If a partition becomes RAW means that your partition is unformatted.
Cause can be either a boot sector problem or a faulty file system.
A wrong partition in your partition table can cause such problems too.
Normally there shouldn't be any reason to delete any partition using testdisk.
Unfortunately your disk doesn't get recognized anymore.
Is your disk still recognized in your device manager and disk management console?
To access any data on your disk, disk size must be recognized correctly.
Is your disk still recognized in your BIOS/UEFI?
Can you start your computer when the disk is connected?

Hi Fiona,

Thank you for your response. I was able to get the HDD recognized again by unplugging and plugging in the USB over and over (at this stage, Minitool was able to recognize the disk as well, I can see browse the files in there).
Then I used Testdisk again, to change the partition from * to Primary, the system asked me to reboot the computer. After reboot, the Minitool recognize the disk as "bad disk" and i can't browse for files anymore. Then I relaunched Testdisk this is what I get.

After selecting the proper disk, this is what I have in the log file.

Should I re-analyze and deep scan again? And just thinking ahead, if i am going to do a deep scan over night, what steps should I take when the deep scan is complete?

I'd recommend not to write something to your disk anymore.
You should have a try try to list your files and if your files are listed, you should copy them to another healthy disk or partition.
You current partition table is not readable anymore.

But it looks like that your partition is found:

If your partition is displayed, you should press p to have a try to list your files.
Hopefully your files are listed?
If your file system is damaged, please let me know.
At the bottom of the testdisk display you'll find all the commands to copy your data using testdisk.
Standard path is the testdisk folder.
Please select only important files and folders.
You should avoid any unnecessary stress to your disk.
If you'd like to change directories, you can select those two dots in the upper area of the testdisk display and pressing enter you'll get one directoy up till your disk selection.
You can choose another healthy disk or partition, where you'd like to copy your data to.
To enter a folder as a destination, you can select your folder and using the right arrow key on your keyboard to enter it.
You can start the copy process.

After file recovery you should run a diagnose on your disk.
Info will follow.
Please don't write anything to your disk and stress your disk as little as possible.

Hi Fiona,

Thanks again for the help. I just followed your instructions on the last post. I was able to list the files in the hard drive by pressing "p" and gone through all the file selections and copy selected files. However, the copying process isn't fun.
it says "copying, please wait... 0 ok, 4458 failed", then went straight back to listed files..

**One strange thing I found was that at the very beginning, when I select the disk -> analyze -> no partition shown with a message "Partition: Read Error". I have to do Quick Search to get the " >* HPFS - NTFS 0 32 33 91197 195 6 1465090048" to show up. is that normal?***

Think I might have figured out why it failed to copy files at 1st try. Somehow the default directory is faulty, so I manually entered the location where the files should be copied to. Now it's copying slowly but surely. Hopefully all files will be copied.

Now I see hope in my data recovery!!

Some hints to copy files:
You should never write data to an affected disk.
If testdisk hangs due to read errors, you can try to copy folders from the end of your listed files.
Skip damaged folders and files and select the next files and folder (subdirectories).
Knoppix LiveCD runs a little bit more stable and can copy more files which windows cannot.
In case, you'll get more info.
After recovery check your disk, running CrystalDiskInfo.

The portable version is recommended because the installer (exe) contains adware Open Candy.
If your disk is bad, it should be replaced.

Thanks Fiona,

I notice something when I was copying files to a unaffected disk. Say if I have a video file in the external HDD i'm trying to rescue that is 53MB, but the copied file via Testdisk is only 40MB, which makes the video unplayable. Is there any way to tackle that? (i've tried re-copy and change directory of new location).

Another question, after I am done getting the files out of my external HDD, and ran Crystaldisk Info, the HDD is shown as "unknown" status, so I couldn't tell if I can fix the HDD and keep using it for not-so-important files. Consider I won't trust this HDD with crucial files anymore, even though it has served me well in the last couple of years.

If your disk is not initialized, crystaldiskinfo might probably not work?
Can you look into your disk management console, on how is your disk listed?
Also testdisk wouldn't be able to write any partition.
You current partition table (MBR) displays only partition read error.
Please let me know, how is your disk listed under your disk management console?
