Unallocated 3TB GPT drive

#1 Postby adilibe » 23 May 2012, 19:06

I did a fresh windows install a few days ago only to find out that my Seagate 3TB external hard drive which I used to back everything up wasn't showing up under windows. I checked the disk manager and it's now showing up as unallocated . Quick search doesn't do anything and then it goes into deep search but It seems like its going to take a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time, do I have any hope? :|

Here are some screenshots...

For some more background information. Once I turned on the computer after the Windows install, the first time I checked the disk manager I saw that it my 3TB was now being listed as an unallocated Intel MBR drive which was split into 2.2TB and .7TB rather than a single 3TB GPT. So i converted to GPT and did nothing else.

EDIT: Looked around on the boards some more and I switched to the 32-bit version. One more thing is that on the "select media" screen...I see my 3TB drive listed twice

Once as /dev/sde/
Once as \\.\PhysicalDrive4

Also when I select Advanced this is what I see :|

Would it be possible to use TestDisk6.14 -32bit?
The 64bit-version is only intended on systems lacking wow64 as some features are not available.
Windows doesn't display the disk type like GPT or basic correctly.
Because at the moment I'm testing it.
To exclude anything wrong, would it be possible to right click in your disk management console in the left square called basic and Disk 5?
Please upload a screen.
If your disk type is GPT you could immediately diagnose your boot sector.
Infos will follow.
Even my disk is converted as GPT and still displayed as basic.

Same situation like in my test.
Your disk is displayed as basic but if you right click it, it displays that you can convert it to MBR.
So you know exactly that you have a GPT disk.

Would it be possible to run in TestDisk Quick Search?
Your found partition should be MSData!
If your partition is found, you can check it and press p to have a try to list your data.
Your current partition is a MS Reserved partition.
This partition doesn't contain your data.

The Quick Search screen looks like that first screen shot that I posted

Image

I ran a quick search and it didn't do anything. It never found a MSData partition, so then it automatically goes into a deeper search. Currently it has been running for 6.5 hours and only 2%........................... :(

Image

Should I just wait and let this continue to run?

Update: Here is where I'm at after about 42hours of running deep search. :|

Should I keep running this deep search? Does anyone have a suggestion for my problem?

Did you use the 64bit-version again?
http://i48.tinypic.com/34y199u.png
I recommend to use the 32-bit version!
Please could you repeat your diagnose using the 32-bit version?
At least, to recover a partition, your partition should be found.
If not, you should recreate the same situation like before without to format something.
Probably it requires to recover your MSReserved partition first. to get the start from you previous MSData-partition.
But Infos will follow only if you didn't find your MS Data partition

Let me try to explain better. I'm not using the 64-bit version anymore. I just got finished running a deep search which took a little less than 2 weeks time and I got the following screen which says "Drive too small".

Image

That didn't work so just now, I quickly started testdisk and ran as admin. selected my 3TB hard drive. Clicked EFI GPT partition. Clicked Analyze (the same as i did before) Then I get this screen again which says No FAT, NTFS, ext2, JFS, Reiser, cramfs or XFS marker.

Image

Now once I select [quick search] nothing shows up for about 10 seconds then It immediately goes into this screen which would take almost 2 weeks to run again so I quit Test Disk. Here is the screen and here is the logfile.

What I'm saying is that I don't understand what you mean by recovering the MSReserved partition to get the start from my previous MSData, How do I do that because I'm given no option for this. Sorry, I'm just really frustrated by this...I really do appreciate the help so far.
