Is it possible to repair a CR2 RAW file after recovery?

#1 Post by Speller124 »

Hello,

I user PhotoRec some time ago to recover a bunch of lost photos from an SD Card from my Canon. In the main this worked well and I seemed to recover most of the RAW CR2 files that were lost. However, I have now been trawling through them and have come across a handful that cannot be read quite properly.

The odd thing is that I have installed the latest Microsoft RAW CODEC pack and I can see a preview of the files, then when I try to open them, for a moment I see the full images in whatever application - then they either go black or I see a message saying that the image cannot be displayed. Further, I also have FastStone Image Viewer installed that uses its own RAW CODEC and I can view the full size image with no issues.

I wondered if anyone knows of a way to repair the CR2 file? gamestop survey

Try to open your file with a program that is able to save your CR2-file in a different format.
Save your CR2-file as a different lossless file type, p.e. tiff with some compression options.

Your CR2-file is broken because either some sectors of your SD-card are not readable anymore or Photorec assembled the wrong clusters.
The latter happens easily once you delete pictures on your SD-card and continue to take pictures.
