Testdisk frozen

#1 Post by antcargom »

Hello, good afternoon everyone.
Please excuse my poor English, as Spanish is my native language.
My computer is an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz 2.90 GHz, with 8.00 GB of RAM installed. Windows 10 Home (v.22H2) 64-bit.
The partition on a TOSHIBA 2.5" 1TB SATA3 hard drive connected to my PC via USB disappeared.
It contains information I don't want to lose.
I downloaded Testdisk 7.3-WIP. I ran it, and without changing any of the parameters suggested by the program, it doesn't finish its job. It freezes.
The only strange thing I notice is that the program detects "0000000000000000" as the serial number of the device to be scanned.
[img]https://tinypic.host/image/Testdisk-00.3g4swx[img]
I would appreciate your help. I can send screenshots if you're interested. Thank you very much.

As far as I know, the zeroed serial number doesn't matter.

Try to connect your 2,5'' disk internally in a desktop computer using a different cable.
Post your log file.

Post your smartmontools log file to learn how the disk thinks about its health status:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=10910

Avoid using the jpg format for Terminal screenshots, p.e. png is more suitable.

Your links are pointing to a web adress but not to pictures.
Please uploads your pictures using the attachment tab on the bottom of the page.

SMART attributes suggests that your disk fell twice. It is running too hot (max. temperature 52°).
Furthermore your disk is probably a refurbished one.

Saying that TestDisk freezed is not a sufficient bug description.

First, the images:
This is my “machine”:
In Windows Computer Management: Image
In HDD Guardian 7.1 with smartctl 6.5: Image

When I say "TestDisk has frozen," I mean I follow the steps the program tells me to, and it stops:
I run the "TestDisk" program and It shows me.
>[ Create ] Create a new log file.
I press "Enter". It shows me:
Select a media and choose 'Proceed' using arrow keys:

Disk \\.\PhysicalDrive3 - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100

I select: Disk \\.\PhysicalDrive3 - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100
I push “Enter”: >[Proceed ]
It shows me:

I push “Enter” and it shows me:

[ Options ] Modify options
[ Quit ] Return to disk selection

I push “Enter” and it shows me:

I push “Enter” and it shows me:

Analyse cylinder 121601/121600: 99%
MS Data 2048 1953523711 1953521664 [Externo Fotos 1TB]

Stop

And from that moment on, the program freezes. I've left it for hours without taking any action, and nothing.
I have to stop the program with the Windows task manager.

[Externo Fotos 1TB] is the name of my HDD

It's a hard drive I've never had any problems with, and I didn't work with it much. I only used it to add photos, delete duplicates, and view them.
The origin of the disc is reliable, Media Mark.

I don't know what's going on with the images. It's working like the first time.

I can see them using these URLs:

HDD Guardian 7.1 with smartctl 6.5: https://tinypic.host/image/HDD-Guardian ... 6.5.3hAZpd

Post your log file.

Post your smartmontools log file to learn how the disk thinks about its health status:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=10910
When I wrote "post your log file" I was referring to your TestDisk logfile.
You did not provide any feedback regarding the proposed different disk connection above.

You did not upload your pictures as I asked for. Instead you posted a link to a web adress instead of the picture. That link does not appear as a picture but as a link in this forum:
https://tinypic.host/image/MY-Disks.3hISoz

A link to a picture contains the name of the picture ad the end such as

https://myhoster/mydisk.jpg

You can clone your failing disk using ddrescue as described in the manual and operate on the clone for recovery purposes.

Hello again.
Please excuse my clumsiness in interpreting your advice. I first need to translate from English so I can understand what you're asking me later. Besides, I'm not a computer technician; I just have a great desire to learn. Thank you for your patience.

1) I don't currently have another device to connect the disk directly.

2) Just a couple of days ago, I discovered that "testdisk.log" was being generated in the testdisk directory, and that even if the program couldn't finish its work, it was still generating it.
I attach the last one to this post.

3) I'm not familiar with the ddrescue program, but I think that to make a copy of the disk I want to repair, I'll need at least one other similar disk to clone, and for now, I have to wait to buy a new one. I need to think about it.

4) I have read some posts on the cgsecurity forum that refer to the same problem that my disk has or similar. I will read them carefully and I am sure I will learn more.
I can see post with "testdisk stop working", "TestDisk stops at 99% while analyzing for lost partitions", "i see with testdisk, it stuck at 99%", and some more.

5) Regarding the images attached to the posts, I only managed to get you to see them in the first one.
Image

6) I send you three files.txt obtenidos with HDD Guardian Toolbox and a Testdisk.log file.
HDD Guardian Toolbox USB scan.txt
(28.18 KiB) Downloaded 2619 times
HDD Guardian Toolbox System information.txt
(6.12 KiB) Downloaded 2600 times
HDD Guardian Toolbox Smartctl scan.txt
(13.51 KiB) Downloaded 2620 times

Thanks again for your attention.

Why don't you upload your pictures to this website?

I asked you to do so here:
viewtopic.php?p=39172#p39172

This way your pictures don't get lost or deleted at "tinypics" and other people can learn from your case in the future as well.

THIS
https://tinypic.host/image/MY-Disks.3vGIww
is a link to a web page.

THIS
https://tinypic.host/images/2025/03/27/MY-Disks.png
is the link to your picture.

When putting it into the images tags

Image

it appears right in your posting.
Please be aware of the difference between posting a link to a web page and one directly to a picture.
Anyway, you should upload your pictures to THIS website.
