Help needed recover partition Mac

#1 Post by globalmark »

Hi guys

trying to restore EXT HDD partition - i managed to install and use , it finds partition ok (so does disk utility) - i have clicked write and very quickly says need to reboot to take effect .
i reboot but still Partition will not mount or show up
i tried back to Disk Utility Mount - nothing happens
i tried first aid - failed
i tried safe mode - same as above
i tried a different Mac computer - same

the HDD is there as tried DMDE free and seems to show all files but free only seems to recover odd file -

So any help to make this partition show up again appriciated - i am not into terminal or coding but can follow or copy and paste bits no worries
thanks Mark

What is "EXT HDD"? Do not use abbreviations to simplify your life and make mine bad. "HDD" is perfectly OK. But "EXT HDD" has two possible meanings.
partition - i managed to install and use
What did you install and use?!
, it
Who is "it"? Avoid pronouns!
finds partition ok (so does disk utility) - i have clicked write and
Who?

The secret partition type you do not mention determins if TestDisk can look inside after finding it.

You should really make an effort so that you can be understood. If you cross-read the forum, you quickly notice which requests can be easily understood and which can not.

Hi
Thanks for the reply - sorry if i didnt make sense - i will try answer all .

EXT HDD - means External Harddrive

I managed to install and Use - i installed (Test disk) and managed to use it as instructed

It - test disk

So i used Test disk as per instructions - as on my external Harddrive there is 2 partitions - one of which mount and one does not - however both show up on disk utility and test disk -
Using - test disk the partition that does not mount - how do i use test disk to fix it and make it mount again ???
I have tried clicking the write button which seems to work - after a couple seconds Test disk (terminal) says reboot for changes to take effect - but after restart the Harddrive partion still does not mount

SO help is needed on using test disk to mount the partion that does not mount ..

Thanks - I hope thats clearer .
cheers Mark

TestDisk, not "Test disk" is the name of the software.
as per instructions - as on my external Harddrive there is 2 partitions - one of which mount and one does not - however both show up on disk utility and test disk -
Using - test disk the partition that does not mount - how do i use test disk to fix it and make it mount again ???
If you don't answer my questions, I can't answer yours.
I stated above:
[... The secret partition type you do not mention determines if TestDisk can look inside after finding it ...]

That means that you have to specify which partition type/file system had been installed on the unreadable partition. TestDisk comes with a very limited number of tools whose availability depends on the file system used.

I have tried clicking the write button which seems to work - after a couple seconds Test disk (terminal) says reboot for changes to take effect - but after restart the Harddrive partion still does not mount

SO help is needed on using test disk to mount the partion that does not mount ..
Please read the enclosed manual or the online documentation. TestDisk does not mount anything with regards to your Apple operating system.

Thanks - I hope thats clearer .

Hi

Check - Testdisk

i am not sure whats meant by secret Partition - its just a standard External Harddrive - used for a Mac
but if helps its a 2TB harddrive in GUID and each partition is 1.45gb Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which works fine
also the one that doesnt mount is
550GB Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

i have read for 2 days the step by step instructions and also forum comments as well as googled but all i can find is use Write - i cannot find how to fix this so this Partition will work .

So any help much appriciated - Thanks "recuperation"

Your TestDisk manual came with a PDF file included thas is labeled "TestDisk.pdf".

When you clicked the entry for Macs in the download section

https://www.cgsecurity.org/Download_and ... 64.tar.bz2

there is a reference to the documentation again (which is included in the download anyway).

As there are Apple-specific instructions in there, it might be a bad idea to ignore them.
You don't need to read the manual like a novel. Reading the directory, using the search function in your PDF reader, cross-reading the content is sufficient in most cases.

Surprisingly there is a section labeled "6.6. Running TestDisk, PhotoRec under macOS". It is worth reading that section. The manual is accessible as well.

https://www.cgsecurity.org/testdisk_doc/running.html

When visiting the web site https://www.cgsecurity.org and clicking on "TestDisk"

you are lead to

https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

which gives you an overview what TestDisk can do.

Hi

thanks for the reply - i have read all of this inc most of the manual however nothing here has helped - i dont think testdisk restarts itself under sudo - but as far as i understand i did all correctly and clicked write that partition as in manual which happenned very fast 1-2 seconds then had to reboot computer for effects to take place but nothing changed .

i am trying to recover a Partition as mentioned - get this partition to Mount again -all info appears there if i use free version disk drill or other , but just doesnt mount .
so any help to make it mount would be amazing

thanks Mark

Repair of possibly broken partitions is rather the exception than the rule.

Use this example to try to list your files and folders and copy them to a free disk:

https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step

If that fails try other software productes. If everything fails, use PhotoRec.
