ok, so, I tried to write the partition since I didn't get an answer, then tried analysing again to see the file system type, then I finally notice the sector size mismatch warning.

after I noticed, I set the geometry setting to 512.

Turns out there were a bunch of partitions that actually counted as deleted.

I set the ones without damaged file systems to primary (whoops! checked the step by step again, should've set them to logical!) that ended up causing a write error, and the disk drive temporarily disconnected.

When it reconnected, I tried analyse again, but it didn't find anything. The Windows disk manager did list a correct partition size though.

Stay tuned for more. I'm going to try safely restarting testdisk

Oh yeah, bad GPT partition entries, invalid checksum was also mentioned when I set the sector size to 512

hm, I can't seem to set it to logical, but the files still seem to be there

maybe I'll see what I can find in the new E and F drives

Testdisk detected a none partition type in the two new drives.

The E: drive contained my files, but the F: drive contained the recovery partition

Windows has detected these drives, but is telling me to format them.

what do I do to get these files into my computer?

Dunno whether to use chkdsk, copy the disk, or do testdisk undelete.

The Quick Search is taking a while, but I have a question to ask:

Should I have selected the intel partition type in the beginning, even when the disk manager listed the disk as GPT? I get the feeling that I've been going about this problem wrong from the beginning...

the quick scan listed a... Linux partition? My old drive was on a Windows computer though...

was this a result of the earlier GPT write that had an error?
